Schmitt and Doyle Tied for Lead of N.Y.S. Women's Amateur

July 16, 2014

Poughkeepsie, NY – July 16, 2014. After two days at Dutchess Golf Club, Emily Doyle and Christine Schmitt are tied for the lead at the 2014 New York State Women’s Amateur Championship after shooting a 2-day total of 150 (+8). Schmitt shot the low round today (73), and Doyle, who was tied for the lead starting the day, managed to shoot 76 despite a stretch of four bogies in a row. Anna Ausanio, Victoria DeGroodt and Kit Creighton find themselves all two strokes back at 10-over par. The cut, consisting of exactly the top 40 players, fell at 170.

Heavy overnight rain forced the second round of the championship to be postponed by four hours. Despite the wet course conditions, players were able to manage the course well, as it played 0.2 strokes easier than it did in the first round. Doyle said, “I don’t really think it [the heavy rain] did much,” when asked how all the rain impacted her play today.

Schmitt also had similar comments regarding the rains effect on her round. Schmitt’s mindset going into the final round will – even with the lead – not be much different than it was today, saying, “I guess sort of the same way as today…” when asked what her preparation and mindset would be for tomorrow.

The 2014 N.Y.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship is running concurrently with the Women’s Amateur Championship. Kim Kaul (160 total) leads Joanna Beatty and Nancy Kroll by 1 stroke (161 total). Unlike yesterday, Kroll did not make any birdies, but also unlike yesterday she said that she did not make any double-bogies or worse. Kaul had a poor start to her second round, but she got it going later on in the day. Kaul has previously held a lead going into the final round (N.Y.S. Women’s Senior Amateur Championship), and she said, “I’ll just have to keep the same mindset,” when asked about how she will prepare for tomorrow’s round.

Both championships figure to be closely contested tomorrow. 5 players are within two strokes of the lead in the Women’s Amateur Championship and 5 players are within three strokes of the lead in the Women’s Mid Amateur Championship. Tee times start at 8:00 AM tomorrow, and the championship ceremony will commence after the completion of the third round.
