PREVIEW: 2018 NYS Women's Senior & Super Senior Amateur Championships

THENDARA, N.Y. – The upcoming 2018 New York State Women’s Senior & Super Senior Championships are set to challenge many of the best senior women amateur golfers around the state throughout 36 holes of stroke play over two days from August 21-22, 2018. This is the fifth time the championship will be conducted at Thendara Golf Club in the tournament’s long history.

The championship begins on Tuesday with 18 holes of stroke play and the 120-player field will be divided and split between starting tees of #1 and #10. Wednesday, the field will play another 18 holes of stroke play to decide champion in both divisions (Senior & Super Senior) as well as age division winners, for both gross and net. If a tie for either championship exists after 36 holes, a sudden-death playoff will determine the winner.

Age groups: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75+

Defending Champions:

Senior - Mary Sicard (Queensbury Country Club) – finished at 5-over 153 (79-74) to win by a stroke over Mary Jo Kelly (Wolferts Roost Country Club) at last year’s championship to win her second consecutive title.

Super Senior – Sandra Wood (Cornell University Golf Course) shot a 10-over 156 (79-77) to win by two strokes over Michelle Marquis (Pompey Club) in her fourth overall championship victory, an NYSGA record.

The 2017 championship was conducted at Corning Country Club in Corning, N.Y.

Format: 36 holes of stroke play, played over two days of competition. 

Eligibility: This championship is open to female amateur golfers over 50 years of age, and are members of the NYSGA, either by (1) belonging to an NYSGA member club or (2) joining the NYSGA directly as an eClub member. Players must also have an active, USGA Handicap Index issued by an NYSGA member club. To compete in the super senior division, players must be 65 and older.

The Field 

Past NYS Women’s Senior Champions

Mary Sicard, 56, of Queensbury Country Club, will attempt to defend her title for a second time after winning the last two consecutive championships, in her first two years competing in the field.

Kim Kaul, 60, of Gowanda Country Club, is a two-time NYS Women’s Senior champion (her last victory in 2015 at Thendara Golf Club) and has finished as runner-up in both the Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur, including this year’s Mid-Amateur at Yahnundasis Golf Club.

Nancy Kroll, 55, of Pinehaven Country Club, was crowned NYS Women’s Senior champion in 2014 after a fifteen-year hiatus from golf.

Susan Kahler, 60, of Ballston Spa Country Club, won the 2013 Championship at Wayne Hills Country Club.

Carina Watkins, 57, of Beaver Meadows Golf Club, was the 2011 champion at Clifton Springs Country Club.

Jan LaVigne, 62, of Ravenwood Golf Club, took home the trophy at the Whiteface Club in 2007. 

Sue Sims, 78, of Skaneateles Country Club, a three-time champ, won her trio of titles in the 90’s at Dutchess Golf and Country Club in ’93, again the following year at Cavalry Club and her final in ’96 at Lockport Town Country Club.

Past NYS Women’s Super Senior Champions

Cecily Havens, 69,of Pompey Club, will attempt to capture her third NYS Women’s Super Senior title in four years after winning in 2016 at the Whiteface Club & Resort and Thendara Golf Club in 2015.

Michelle Marquis, 70, of Pompey Club, won the Senior title when the championship was held at the Country Club of Rochester in 2000. Fourteen years later, she took home the Super Senior title in 2014 at Kanon Valley Country Club.

Located near Old Forge, NY, Thendara Golf Club is a beautiful, 18-hole course surrounded by beauty and wildlife in the picturesque Adirondack setting. 

The original Donald Ross designed front nine was constructed in 1921 and the back nine, designed by Russell Bailey, was completed in 1956.
