Changes in NYS Junior Amateur Brings More Opportunity

SYRACUSE, N.Y. --  The school year is ending soon and junior golfers will begin setting their sights towards local and state amateur competitions to continue developing their skills throughout the summer months. 

The annual New York State Boys’ & Girls’ Junior Amateur Championships serve as great opportunities for young golfers to compete under the Rules of Golf in fun, competitive environments while fostering relationships with peers and gaining recognition among college coaches and members New York’s golf community.

Over the past few years, the NYSGA has taken various steps to ensure qualifying and competing in this championship is more easily accessible to junior golfers around the state.

These examples include: 

1. Developing ten FREE sectional qualifiers in late June and early July hosted at various NYSGA member clubs from the Mid-Hudson to Buffalo. 

2. Raising the Junior age requirement from 17 to 18 to compete in this tournament. 

3. Providing free official USGA handicaps through a NYSGA eClub to any junior golfer who doesn't already have one active through a member club. 

4. Hosting the Championship at Colgate University's Seven Oaks Golf Club in Hamilton, NY, to provide players with a centralized, high-quality golf course that's easily accessible from anywhere around the state. 

We highly encourage any eligible junior player to register for one of the FREE sectional qualifiers listed below, which includes 18 holes of golf and a complimentary players lunch.

About the NYS Boys’ & Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship

This year’s tournament is July 25 – 26, 2017 at Seven Oaks Golf Club in Hamilton, NY. Sectional qualifying will take place from Jun 25 – July 9 at ten different sites around the state. The format of each qualifier is 18 holes of individual stroke play. The number of qualifying and alternate spots for each site will be announced once entries close. Any ties for qualifying or alternate spots will be broken by sudden death playoff. 

The Championship field will consist of 156-players (78 Juniors, 36 Boys, 42 Girls), including exempt players and sectional qualifying place winners. The format for each championship is 36 holes of individual stroke play over two days with an 18-hole practice round the day prior.

Tournament Eligibility
Entries are open to male and female amateur golfers who are either (1) residents of New York State or (2) members of an NYSGA Member Club. All entrants MUST have a Handicap Index issued by a club which is licensed to use the USGA Handicap System or through an NYSGA eClub. An entrant is considered a “junior” if he is at least 15, but younger than 19, as of July 25, 2017. An entrant is considered a “sub-junior” if he is 14 or younger as of July 25, 2017. An entrant wishing to compete as a “girl” must be 18 years old or younger as of July 25, 2017.

History of the Tournament 
All three championships have rich traditions dating back decades. The Junior Amateur began in 1931, while the Boys’ & Girls’ championships began in 1957 and 1963, respectively. Many past champions have moved on to successful careers at the intercollegiate, amateur and professional level including Dominic Bozzelli, Gavin Hall, John Konsek, Joey Sindelar, David May, Tom Scherrer, Yaroslav Merkulov, Matthew Stasiak, Nick Raasch, Dottie Pepper, Bailey Cocca, Moira Dunn and many more! This will be the fourth time the Boys’ & Junior has been held at Seven Oaks, and the fifth time for the Girls’ Junior.
