Four New Yorkers Compete in 72nd U.S. Junior Amateur

TOLEDO, OHIO (Update: July 18, 2019) - Nathan Han of Somers advanced to the Round of 32 at the 72nd U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Inverness Club this week  in Toledo, Ohio.

Han fell three and two in the Round of 32 to Brian Ma of California. The Somers native was the only New Yorker to make the two-round stroke play cut.

James Allen of Scarsdale missed the cut at 10-over 152. Alex Zurat of Victor finished at 11-over 153, while Ryan Hart of Buffalo finished at 13-over 155.

TOLEDO, Ohio (July 12, 2019) – Four junior golfers from New York State will compete in the 72nd U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Inverness Club next week, July 15-20, in Toledo, Ohio.

The group includes James Allen of Scarsdale, Nathan Han of Somers, Buffalo native Ryan Hart (resident of Naples, Florida), Alex Zurat of Victor.

The U.S. Junior Amateur consists of 156 competitors who are under the age of 19 years old. The golfers will compete over 36 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday, after which a cut of the low 64 players will be applied. Those who make the cut will advance to match play. 

The par-71 layout will be set up at 7,339 yards for this week’s championship.

The Donald Ross designed course has homed many elite championships, including four U.S. Open Championships (1920, 1931, 1957, & 1979), as well as the 1944 NCAA Championship, the 1973 U.S. Amateur, the 1986 & 1993 PGA Championships, the 2003 & 2011 U.S. Senior Open, and the 2009 NCAA Men's Championship.

Allen qualified at the Clinton Country Club in Clinton, Connecticut after carding a 72. 

Han will compete in his second U.S. Junior Amateur. He missed the cut at last year’s championship. Han won the 2015 and 2016 Metropolitan Golf Association Boys’ Championship, the first player to win consecutive crowns in 30 years. This summer, Han finished third in the Ike MGA Stroke Play and secured his second NYSPHSAA Boy’s Golf Championship in three years at RTJGC at Cornell by seven strokes in June. He shot a 69 to qualify for the championship at Rockrimmon Country Club in Stamford, Connecticut. 

Hart finished T-4 at the 2018 NYS Boys’ Junior Championship. More recently, the 17-year-old finished T-18 at the 2018 Florida Boys Junior at Streamsong Resort earlier this month. The Naples, Fla. Resident is the son of PGA Tour professional Dudley Hart.

Zurat has won both the U.S. Challenge Cup Granite State Junior Classic and the New York State Junior PGA Championship. Recently, he committed to Old Dominion University and will join the men’s golf program for the 2019-20 season. Zurat and Hart shared co-medalist honors with Luca Cimoroni of Canada at their sectional qualifying round. The trio finished at two-under 69 at Yahnundasis Golf Club.
