They each earned exemptions into this year’s field, as the USGA canceled 2020 qualifying due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 144-player field was filled through 28 exemptions categories.

Balin, 33, will make his U.S. Open debut after earning his spot with a third-place finish on the 2019 PGA Club Pro Player of the Year list (the 2020 season was canceled by the pandemic). The head pro at Fresh Meadow Country Club on Long Island is originally from Maryland, but has called Westchester home for almost two decades. He spent time working at Sunningdale Country Club, and Westchester Country Club prior to his current position. He’s appeared in seven PGA Championships, including 2019 at Bethpage Black and TPC Harding Park in May.

McCarthy, 35, was one of five players who were exempt based on their finish in the three-event 2020 Korn Ferry Tour Series. This will be the LeMoyne College alum’s second U.S. Open, the first coming in 2010 at Pebble Beach Golf Links, where he earned his spot through local and sectional qualifying. He claimed his first Korn Ferry Tour win in 2019 at the Savannah Golf Championship, and registered four wins on the MacKenzie Tour-Canada back in 2016. This season, he tied for third at the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Championship, and tied for second in the Albertsons Boise Open.

Wu, 23, earned an exemption from the Korn Ferry Tour Series as well, claiming his first professional victory during the 2020 Korn Ferry Tour Championship. The Stanford graduate, competed in the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach as an amateur and finished tied for 35th. He was a member of the 2019 Walker Cup Team, a semifinalist in the 2018 Western Amateur and won the 2017 Porter Cup.

This marks the 73rd USGA championship played in New York and the 20th U.S. Open conducted in the state. Winged Foot’s famed West Course has hosted the national event five times since the club was established in 1923 (1929, 1959, 1974, 1984, 2006).

Other clubs in New York that have hosted a U.S. Open include: Bethpage State Park (Black Course), Country Club of Buffalo, Fresh Meadow Country Club, Garden City Golf Club, Inwood Country Club, Oak Hill Country Club (East Course) and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.
