Moore's Monthly: World Handicap System Changes in 2024

February 21, 2024

A monthly column from the NYSGA's Executive Director, Bill Moore

As we wait for the weather to improve, many of our staff members (and some dedicated volunteers) have been brushing up on the Rules of Golf to prepare for the USGA’s notoriously difficult 100 question exam in order to gain either advanced (75%) or expert (90%) certification.

Another exam, but I think a much easier one, is for World Handicap System certification.   Every club around the country must have someone pass this exam ( can be a staffer or member) in order to offer the GHIN Service to its membership.  So this Spring we will need all of our 262 clubs to complete this task.

White the Rules of Handicapping aren’t overly difficult, there are some key changes this season…especially the treatment of 9 hole scores.  No longer will scores be held in some imaginary queue to be combined with another, but they will be “scaled” to create an 18 hole differential.  For more information on this change and a few others, click here.

Over the next couple of months I will be hosting some online seminars for anyone interested in learning more, so please keep an eye out for that on our website, www.nysga.org.  If you are a real go-getter and want to take the Licensing Exam for your club, have your golf professional (or staff member) get a hold of me directly and I can send out the direct link to satisfy this USGA requirement.

As always, thank you for supporting the NYSGA and let’s hope for an early Spring.

Bill
