Jenna Hoecker (Brook-Lea Country Club), with a final round score of one-under par (70) and the only under-par round of the Championship, propelled her way to victory, at the Country Club of Ithaca on Thursday, to win her first NYS Women’s Amateur Championship.
Starting the final round Thursday morning with a one-shot lead over the Championship field, Jenna began her round with the look of determination. In the opening nine, she shot a solid seven pars and two birdies. Her birdie on the ninth hole boosted her momentum as she headed into the back nine seeming disciplined and content with the first half of her round. However, an errant iron-shot off the tee on the par-3 eleventh resulted in her first bogey of the day. She responded to her bogey with back-to-back birdies on 12 & 13. This back-and-forth battle continued throughout the remainder of her round as she marked down two bogies and three pars on the last five holes.
Although the back nine proved a bit more difficult for Jenna, she remained confident in her game and poised on the course – a notable and impressive change from previous appearances in NYSGA tournaments – actions that most definitely helped her capture the title of NYS Women’s Amateur Champion.
Throughout the remainder of the summer golf season, Hoecker will continue to play tournament golf in NY State. In addition, this fall, she will return to Stetson University as a senior to compete for her final season on the women’s golf team. Hoekcer’s new found confidence and poise will undoubtedly carry her through what she hopes to be a successful senior season.
Rounding out the top-five finishers was 2013 NYS Women’s Amateur Runner-Up and round one leader Rebecca Studin (Cornell University Golf Course) with a three-round total of 227, Lauren Petty (Timber Banks Golf Course) in third place with a 228, 2013 NYS Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion, Teresa Cleland (Belleuve Country Club) in fourth place with a 230 and Marah Penn (Crag Burn Golf Club) & Rene Sobolewski (Crag Burn Golf Club) tied for fifth place, each with a 233.
NYS Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship
Teresa Cleland (Belleuve Country Club) claimed the title of 2013 NYS Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion for the third consecutive year on Thursday afternoon. She shot a final-round 78 en route to an impressive 54-hole total of 230 to capture the title.
Undoubtedly, Cleland met adversity throughout the final round of the tournament as her final round score was her highest tournament round overall for the week; Cleland posted 12 pars, five bogies and a double bogey.
Still adversity on the golf course is what makes Cleland such an impressive amateur golfer. Although she may find herself with a bad lie now and again, she has an innate ability to maintain composure throughout and put herself back into scoring position.
Most notably, on the par-four fourteenth today, Cleland struggled as she hit a short tee shot that set off a sequence of frustrating shots – this hole resulted in an unfortunate double bogey. Still, Cleland immediately answered her double bogey with an unwavering par on the par-four fifteenth.
When asked earlier in the week about meeting adversity on the course, Cleland said “that’s what I love most, the challenge of the game.” Naturally, this mindset and an unrelenting love for a self-admittingly frustrating game have proven successful for Cleland throughout her career especially this year as she walks away with another win.
Top-five finishers for the 2013 NYS Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship include Julie Murphy (Brookfield Country Club) NYS Women’s Mid-Amateur Runner-Up with a three-round total of 238, Laura Algiero (Whippoorwill Club) in third place with a three-round total of 240, and Joanna Beatty (McCann Golf Course) & Wendy Burton tied in fourth place with a three-round total of 243.
